HOW do footy clubs decide who their No.1 ticket-holders are? We investigate.
PORT Adelaide recently announced it's No.1 ticket-holder for season 2009 is Hollywood actress Teresa Palmer.
My immediate reaction was: isn't that one in the eye for Stuart Dew?
Here is his former club celebrating a woman who seduced one of their favourite sons, encouraged him to quit football and move to America, before leaving him for Russell Brand?
Teresa Palmer doesn't even live in Australia! Why did the Power do it?
What is the status of footy's No.1 ticket-holders these days? How do clubs choose them?
Historically the role was prestigious. Imagine being able to watch the game from the comfort of your own car, which you could park in the middle of the grandstand at Princes Park. That was precisely the honour extended to Carlton's No.1 ticket-holder in 1972 - Sir Robert Menzies.
I can't find any documented evidence to support this, but I would love to believe he beeped the horn when the Blues kicked a goal.
Many clubs, Melbourne, Carlton, St Kilda and Hawthorn included are yet to announce their No.1 ticket-holders for 2009. But where to find them?
Here's rundown on other No.1 ticket-holders:
POLITICIAN
Lynne Kosky MP. (Western Bulldogs current No.1 ticket-holder)
John So (Melbourne in 2008)
THE upside to picking a politician is that they already have some degree of popularity in the community. They have been voted in by their constituents after all. The downside the Bulldogs have found with Lynne Kosky however is that she's very often 15 or 20 minutes late to games and on really hot days can't make it at all.
What clubs must be wary of is politicians using the honour for shameless self promotion. Last year John So was simultaneously No.1 ticket-holder for the Demons and No.2 ticket-holder with the Melbourne Victory.
With rumours circulating that he will soon secure a position as No.3 ticket-holder with the Melbourne Vixens, the Demons may feel that his commitments will compromise him too much to be able to carry out his duties in 2009.
STAR FROM ANOTHER SPORT
Ricky Ponting (North Melbourne)
Lleyton Hewitt (Adelaide)
CHOOSING a sports star is a safe choice for footy clubs, they have instant credibility with the fans. Lleyton Hewitt certainly has been a good No.1 ticket-holder for the Adelaide Crows but perhaps his ticket number should reflect his ranking these days.
EVERYMAN
Jesse Dart (Fremantle No.1 junior ticket-holder)
A REGULAR man in the stands will be easy for other members to relate to. Fremantle only have a junior No.1 ticket-holder but it is an inspired one - Jesse Dart, the kid from the Channel 9 footy show.
I just hope that they don't treat him like one of those kids from the TV soaps and dump him when he's not cute anymore.
The handy thing for Freo last year was that when Jesse wasn't available they just got Peter Bell to carry out his duties.
TV PERSONALITY
Daryl Somers (Geelong)
THE advantage of naming a local TV personality as your No.1 is they have good exposure to the local market. Unless that person is Daryl Somers.
He is a curious choice by the Cats considering his absence from the airwaves. Is it possible that an administrative error has accidentally resulted in him being given life membership to the role as No.1 ticket-holder?
MILLIONAIRE
David Devine (Brisbane Lions)
David Mandie (Richmond)
HAVING a rich number one ticket-holder is definitely an asset for the more struggling clubs. The Tigers have David Mandie to thank for a swimming pool at Punt Road, which they named after him.
NO No.1 TICKET-HOLDER
COLLINGWOOD refuses to name a No.1 ticket-holder as "all members are equally important" ... except for the ones that got thrown out of the cheer squad.
